before I left seattle i made use of the screenprinting studio at the vera project. before even moving to seattle i knew i wanted to become involved w the vera project and for the 8 years I lived there it served me very well. volunteering and then later working was a gateway to so many incredible opportunities and served as a source of many friendships! the screenprinting studio is a truly remarkable resource and i spent many hours there over the course of the last few months before skipping town.

i had screenprinted a bit on paper ten years ago so i wasn’t starting completely in the dark. but the whole process from creating a design to printing on used clothes (most of which were independently dug out of huge clothing piles at the goodwill outlet aka the bins) was a huge lesson in patience and acceptance. a lot of things went wrong and a lot of messes were made. it reminded me a lot of when i’m rushing and trying to multitask in the kitchen while cooking. something terrible happens if i go too fast. I end up spilling the moka pot all over the stove or dropping a knife sharp side down. in the screenprinting studio i kept getting ink all over the underside of the screen, trying to clean it off, making a horrible diluted mess. i had to just stop and clean up and finish during another session.

the tribulations are balanced by the satisfaction of a solid pull of the squeegee across a screen.

anyway, one design is a knock-off and the other is a self portrait. i mostly distributed them to anyone who has the (mis)fortune of being my friend and i sold a few to strangers for $6.66. the rest are in a trash bag in the back of my closet.
